Wear and Care
Looking after your jewels
We want your Bixby pieces to sparkle for years to come! Here's how to keep them looking their best.
18ct Gold Bonded to Stainless Steel
Some of our pieces feature 18ct gold bonded to a stainless steel base—a durable, affordable option that's fully waterproof. Perfect for those who want fashion jewellery that can keep up with real life.
18ct Gold Fill
Gold fill isn't the same as gold plating—it's so much better! Our gold fill pieces contain 5% solid gold, heat-bonded to a base metal (usually copper, brass, or sterling silver). Unlike plated jewellery that can peel or flake, gold fill is legally required to contain 1/20 gold by weight, giving you that gorgeous buttery golden colour that lasts.
With reasonable care, gold fill won't peel, flake, or wear off. It's safe for most people with metal allergies and, with the right love and attention, can last as long as solid gold. Plus, it's nickel-free!
Care tips:
- Avoid excessive moisture when storing your pieces
- Keep away from harsh chemicals, chlorinated pools, and sea water
- Apply perfumes, lotions, and sunscreen before putting on your jewellery
- The occasional shower is fine, but constant exposure to skincare products, sunlight, and salt water will eventually tarnish your piece
- Rinse and dry thoroughly after ocean or pool swims
Depending on how often you wear your pieces, the gold may tarnish over time—but with proper care, you'll enjoy them for years.
14ct & 18ct Gold Vermeil
Gold vermeil (pronounced ver-may) is the luxe option for those who want the look and feel of solid gold without the price tag. Our vermeil pieces feature a thick layer of 14ct or 18ct gold (2-3 microns) bonded over a 925 sterling silver base.
Unlike standard gold plating, vermeil has strict requirements: the gold layer must be at least 2.5 microns thick and applied over sterling silver. This creates a premium, long-lasting finish that's hypoallergenic and tarnish-resistant.
Care tips:
- Water resistant, but avoid prolonged exposure to water, especially chlorinated or salt water
- Remove before applying lotions, perfumes, or harsh chemicals
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
- Gently wipe with a soft cloth after wearing to remove oils and maintain shine
- Avoid abrasive cleaners or polishing cloths that could wear down the gold layer
With proper care, your vermeil pieces will maintain their beautiful lustre for years to come.
Italian Sterling Silver
Our sterling silver pieces are made from Italian sterling silver—an alloy of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals (usually copper or zinc) for strength and durability.
Fine silver is 99.9% pure and doesn't tarnish, but it's too soft for everyday wear. That's why we use sterling silver—it's strong enough for daily life while keeping that beautiful, polishable shine.
Care tip: Keep a soft polishing cloth handy and give your sterling silver a regular polish to prevent tarnishing and keep it gleaming.
Handle with Love
Our pieces are made to last, and we want you to love wearing them! Treat each piece with care—even the highest quality materials can snap or break if handled roughly. Extreme bending, force, or rough handling isn't covered under warranty, so be gentle with your treasures.
